I am going to write about English education
should be introduced to elementary school in Japan. Today, I think this thing
with my partner in our class witch is English discussion. My partner’s name is
Ayano. She is older than me, so she is cool. We are affirmative side. We must
discuss in English in this class. It is difficult for us to discuss. Therefore,
teacher give us time to prepare. We did our best, and our constructive was
completed.
We stand today to strongly support the
proposition that English education should be introduced to elementary school in
Japan.
We really need English because, as we know,
English is the most important language to communicate with people not only in
other countries but also in Japan, so we believe that we should introduce
English education to elementary school and improve our skill on how to
communicate in English more.
We often hear from those people who have
been to foreign countries that they could not communicative with the local
people because of their poor English proficiency. People who could not speak
English ever since we started to learn it at the age of 13. Now we have to
think about education in elementary school. We have 2 points, motivation and
opportunity, to speak English.
Our first point is motivation. We have been
debating on the proposition that we should introduce English education to
elementary school, and we should know what children will think of this new
curriculum. And then, there is a survey regarding how many students want to
learn English to be able to use it in their life. This was surveyed by the
Ministry of Education in Japan. It said that student who want to learn English
is 73.9 %. The target of the survey is the students in 4th and 6th
grades in elementary school. It is easy to discuss with adults about this
problem. However, the target students want to learn English positively. So their
motivation to learn English is pretty high. There are many concerns such as the
ones like, “What are we going to do if students do not come to like English as
they begin at young age?” or “they have to take some times from other subject
or add extra time as they can not get enough time for their study of English
that they need.” However, do not we need English? We need it more and more
these days as the internationalization and interdependence among the countries
progress. We believe every student’s
motivation will influence on good ways to improve their English.
Our second point is opportunity. The opportunity
to speak English is increasing even in Japan. According to the Ministry of
Justice, the number of foreign tourists are getting bigger and bigger. In point
of fact, compared to the number of foreign tourists , from 1964 to 2014. This means
that the number of foreign visitors in 2014 is 38 times bigger than that of the
number of 1964. As a result, we have a lot of opportunities to speak English in
Japan, too. Even Asian people, when they are spoken to, they use English. People
who were asked something did not hesitate to speak English. Especially we often
meet Chinese and Korean in the city. According to TOEIC test company, the Chinese
average score of TOEIC is 716. Korean is 632 and the Japanese score is 512. We found
that the difference between them lie in early education of English. They have
already introduced early English education and likewise we saw it in the city,
they do not hesitate to speak English. For example, as the result of Chinese education,
it is reported by the Ministry of Education in Japan. Many people started to
speak and study English more actively. There is a good influence from early English
education here. As a result, we believe that we are able to also improve Japanese
ability to communicate in English.
We have talked about Motivation and
Opportunity to speak English. For these reasons, we strongly feel that English education
should be introduced to elementary school in Japan.
